USELESS EATERS (Shattered/ Goner/ Burger Records… FACEBOOK) SLOW JERKS (you already know) NICE GUYS (“punx from the 80s hangin ten on a tsunami” FACEBOOK) $6/ 10pm Presented by Unregistered Nurse from Get Bent; Dr. Frank-N-Furter, is that you? Let’s talk about this album cover first ‘cos it’s a pretty great one. Nostalgic pop culture references combined in that good ol’ punk collage fashion hint at what’s inside. A trash bin of youth, road trips, television, beer, alienation, and boredom—it’s your afternoon accompaniment in the form of a little record called Daily Commute. The first Useless Eaters full-length channels weirdo post-punk, like the Swell Maps and Wire, and is jam-packed with melody and full-blown energy. It still seems so odd that Jay Reatard isn’t with us anymore, but his former touring bandmate Seth Sutton ensures that his style lives on in the form of Useless Eaters. Just when I was becoming worried that the punk music of my generation might be seriously degenerating into purified, glossy crap, the Useless Eaters (as well as many of the comrades we rave about on GET BENT!) come along and save my little punk rockin’ soul with eleven tracks of snotty, lo-fi garage punk mayhem out on Tic Tac Totally. Hopefully, we’ll see more music from these guys in the future. In the mean time, Daily Commute has a few goodies to digest. “How U Doing”! “Neon Light”! “Take Advantage of Me”! “Drug Store”! “Vile Nation Part 2”! Where’s part one? Who the hell cares! Turn it up!
