Acid Baby Jesus (Slovenly Records, scuzzy garage from Greece… FACEBOOK) Black Mamba Beat (from South Africa/ London, ex-Black Time… FACEBOOK) Garage Sale (Baltimore’s own! FACEBOOK) + The Thing w 2 Heads DJs Acid Baby Jesus, from Altered Zones; Acid Baby Jesus’ “Hospitals” is a surf-inspired garage opus that’s as heavy on distortion and delay as it is on vibed-out, chant-along vocals. In other words, exactly what you’d expect from a band hailing from the marble mothership of Western civilization: Athens “yogurt, not peaches” Greece. No? After comfortably treading in some insidiously catchy, guitar-driven waters, the track launches into a cacophony that will either suck you down to the ocean floor or leave you gazing at the shoes you’ve been tapping to the beat for the past two minutes. Lifejacket not included. Shout out to Rich Moms for the tip. —Ric Leichtung, International Tapes Black Mamba Beat from Terminal Boredom; V/A Black Mamba Beat / Work That Skirt! split cassette The Black Mamba Beat side of this is totally killer UK-DIY-ish shuffling stuff, perhaps the offspring of some C86 band and the Mae Nurse (or early Yummy Fur) with just a dash of Medway garage. Nine cuts with nary a bummer, standouts being “Makin’ Everybody’s Journey More Pleasant” and it’s hard-n-Krauty robotic rhythm and fall apart bridge, “Beat Over Brains” moody and soulful beat and chanted vox, “Indigo Skate Camp” which predates Wavves’ ideas and does so with a lot more heart. Just really clever overall, the slighty nervous vocals are great compliment to the scratchy guitars and I think the bass playing is totally top notch and really elevates the band and songs to another level. I can see that Captured Tracks guy loving some of this stuff.
