Austin duo YellowFever’s self-titled debut had a certain neighborliness about it, its droll, minimalist pop songs taking on the unhurried tempo of an afternoon stroll. Singer/guitarist Jennifer Moore’s delivery was genial, and the band’s infectious tunes sounded like nursery rhymes for the Austin set, recalling the minimalist pop of Young Marble Giants and the bristly surf-rock of recent tourmates Grass Widow. Then, something decidedly unneighborly happened: another band called Yellow Fever threatened to sue them.
Maybe more new bands should find themselves threatened with legal action, because it really seems to have lit the fire under Moore and drummer Adam Jones, who now make music as Deep Time. “Clouds,” the first single from their forthcoming self-titled debut LP under the new name, kicks everything about their sound up a few notches. Moore’s riffs hobble around with an off-kilter rhythm, while Jones’s economical, driving beat holds the whole thing together. If the sinister, twitchy atmosphere of “Clouds” is any indicator, Deep Time are out to make something more complex than minimalist earworms. “You got bigger while I was away,” Moore lilts on the hook. You could say that again.
