“
Hot damn! Toronto punk quartet Teenanger aren’t here to play. On their second LP, Frights, these three guys and a girl blast through nine songs in a little over twenty minutes, barely stopping to breathe, and in the process hit all the right influences and brands of classic punk rock in less time most bands take to tune up. It’s kinda like getting a really pleasant punch in the face, and I’m still kinda woozy, but let me try to recap.
On tracks like “Cheap Thrills” and “SLW”, the band blast out the kind of chugging, mid-tempo punk perfected by early 80s units like the Adolescents, TSOL, and the Vandals, built from marching drum beats, surfy guitar licks, and snide, snarly vocals. Using that tried-and-true formula as a foundation, Teenanger explore all sorts of punk rock variations, going from the 90s punk n’ roll sound of the New Bomb Turks, the haunting psychedelic guitar squall of the Damned, and the ghostly white boy blues punk of the Gun Club.”
